The blurb;

So, why would I want to use these labels, instead of the ones available for purchase or printing on the www.bookcrossing.com website?

I'd like to stress that you don't need to be able to print any labels or anything like that to join in and release your own books... and there's certainly no reason that you must use my examples below.

No, all you need to be able to do is just write the BCID number of your book inside the cover or on the first page etc, along with the Bookcrossing website address and some "blurb" like this;

"Howdy! Hola! Bonjour! Guten Tag! I’m a very special book, you see, I’m travelling around the world making new friends. I hope I’ve met another friend in you. Please go to www.BookCrossing.com and enter my BCID number (shown below). You’ll discover where I’ve been and who has read me, and I can let them know I’m safe here in your hands.. then... READ and RELEASE me! BCID: 123-4567890."

The BookCrossing website is at it's most basic access level a free to use site. There's no charge to use it at all. The cost of running and maintaining the site is borne out by the sale of the stickers, bags, envelopes and all the other items of BookCrossing stationery that you can buy on the site.

You could say then that by printing your own labels, you are "stealing" from BookCrossing, and I'd agree that's certainly one way of looking at it.

It's up to you; if you have access to blank label stock or paper, a printer, and want to print your own labels and stuff, then feel free to help yourself to any of the files linked to below. I created them, using images taken from the Internet in the main, for myself and other BookCrossing fans originally when the label generator on the BookCrossing site was "broken" and sites like mine became the only places you could get pre-designed label templates if you weren't confident or able to create your own.

CARE! With all these files, check the top margins are set correctly for your printer first, by doing a test print onto a sheet of paper and checking the alignment with your label sheet. These are set up for my printer, a Konica Minolta MFD (“Multifunction Device”), and it’s very likely you’ll need to do some “trial and error” adjusting of the top margin to suit your own printer, before you start printing off your labels.

These were all created in Word 2003 for A4-sized label sheets. A4 size paper is 297 mm long and 210 mm wide. Equivalent size in inches is 11.69" long and 8.27" wide. The nearest US size is “Letter” size which is 11.0" long and 8.5" wide.

If all you see when you open a template in Word is a "blank" page, check that you have "Show Gridlines" turned on, under the "Table" drop-down menu. With this function turned on, you should be able to see the label boundaries on the page / in the template.

They are in the main all done using the "standard" BookCrossing label designs that were available on the BookCrossing website; http://www.bookcrossing.com/, prior to it's new design. Previews of the designs can be seen at the links below (also linked in each template detail);

http://www.fishchipsandmushypeas.co.uk/bc/BC 2 Minis Label Image.jpg.

http://www.fishchipsandmushypeas.co.uk/bc/BC Mailing Seal Label Image.jpg.

Hopefully, having saved them as .doc files should mean that they will work with most, if not, all versions of Microsoft Word. My own labels of choice and that I’m using currently are the Banner 9670019 16 per sheet half and half.doc template ones, and I like to use both designs on each book, typing the same BCID number on them across the row. I like to put the “Psst!” fold-around ones on the book’s cover / inside cover, and then the “Howdy!” ones on the back. Then I slip in one of the “I’m Free!” bookmarks (also available below as BC Bookmarks-MS Word bookmarks.doc) inside, and Bob’s your Uncle; all done, and ready for release. ;-)

Note: If you are printing labels using a laser printer, be sure to use labels produced specifically for the purpose! Laser printers operate at a high temperature and can easily melt the glue holding "normal" labels to their backing, so that they become detached inside the printer! Labels produced for use with a typewriter or photocopier are not generally suitable for laser printers.

If you don’t have Microsoft Word, have a look at the free Microsoft “Word Viewer” application which is available from this link; http://support.microsoft.com/kb/891090, and may still enable you to open the templates, view, print and copy them. You won’t be able to type in the BCID numbers though (I think, can someone confirm this?), but you’ll still be able to run off “blank” sheets ready for the BCID to be written in. Also, there’s no reason why you can’t print off a template sheet onto plain paper, and just cut them out by hand, if that suits you better.

There are preview images of the labels available as links within the template descriptions if you want a look first, before downloading anything.

If you use MS Word, have a type of label sheet not shown below, and providing I can get a MS Word copy of the blank label sheet (like Avery have all theirs available here), I can probably knock up a template of BCID labels for it for you to use, using the existing examples, in next to no time.

Drop me a Private Message via my BookCrossing profile page, giving the label brand, reference, stickers per sheet, layout etc., and any particular choice of existing label you’d like that I’ve replicated, and I’ll do my best to help you out.

I've also knocked up a range of my own label designs, previews of which you can see here;

http://www.fishchipsandmushypeas.co.uk/bc/BC Labels-Avery 5163 Spazcat 10 per sheet.pdf

These use images taken from the Internet in the main, with my text.

You can find templates of these in the Banner section / Avery section.

Aside from those example templates, I've only made up two complete sheet templates for the design "I don't bite!" and "Boris" on Banner 9670019 stock), but if anyone wants one of the others done as a full sheet, or this one done in another layout, please let me know.

Shameless appeal;

Downloaded and used one of the templates? Want to show your appreciation? Why not give me Wings for a month? Go on, you know you want to! ;-)

Or why not drop a pound or two into Shelterboxes' coffers, if you prefer?

A number of BookCrossers, including me, gave to them to support the Japanese earthquake disaster of 2011, and you can see how much we've raised and still add to it by visiting this link;

How to use this page;

The quickest way to find a template on this page is to use your browser’s “Find on this page” function; In Internet Explorer, it can be accessed via the “Edit” drop-down menu, or by using the shortcut key combination of “CTRL+F”. Once you have it open, type in the reference number of the sticker sheet or manufacturer’s name or number “per sheet” etc., and you should be able to quickly see if there are any instances of it in the text below.

Alternatively, you can browse the tables below, where the templates are grouped alphabetically by label manufacturer name. Because most stationery companies seem to base their labels on the Avery brand ones, there's no point creating exact copies for each company. To that end, the "Notes" field in each table may contain text like "Also compatible with Niceday labels, reference numbers;", rather than there being a separate table for say, Niceday labels.

The last table labelled “Miscellaneous” is where you can find things like bookmark templates, “About BookCrossing” flyers, Crossing Zone displays, and many other useful files you can download and use.

Can’t find it? Why not drop me a line as above? I might be able to help.

BookCrossing in a nutshell;

A lot of posts I see in the forums on www.BookCrossing.com are from new members who don't really "get" BookCrossing as a website. They understand that it's something to do with swapping books, but can't grasp it, or find the wealth of information about it on the site a bit daunting.

There's a very easy to follow three-step guide available here; http://www.bookcrossing.com/howto but here's my own take on it, for the layman;

In essence, you create a profile on the BookCrossing website, like "FredBassett1972" or something, just as you would on any other "member" site. Then grab a book you don't want anymore, log into the site, register the book and then choose to release it, journal a quick review of it, choose a place and time to "wild release" it, get it's unique 10-digit number from the site, scrawl the number inside the book along with the website address, then drop the book at your chosen spot at the given time.

The idea is someone then "finds" it by either luck, or by getting a "release alert" for their town via email if they are already a member of BookCrossing, reads it, then goes to the site, enters the number, has a look at the previous journal entries, including yours, leaves their own journal note, before finally deciding on a place to "wild release" it, and thereby starting the whole cycle off again when they leave  the book somewhere themselves.

137KB

BookCrossing labels template for Avery brand multifunction labels (hence no "L" or "J" prefix), reference number 3484, with sixteen 1.46 inch by 4.13 inch labels per sheet in 7-point Arial and 14-point Verdana fonts. Also compatible with Banner reference number; 949006. Two columns of two different labels; one has the “Howdy! Hola! Bonjour! Guten Tag! I’m a very special book, you see…” text, the other column has the text “Hello Kind Reader, Just a quick note that I've registered this book at BookCrossing.com…”, both with space for your BCID number. A preview image of the “Hello!” label is available here; http://www.fishchipsandmushypeas.co.uk/bc/BC Hello Label Image.jpg.

PLEASE NOTE; My own findings with this template is that I wasn't able to print right to the edges of the labels.
 As I understand it, most printers are unable to print to the edges like this, and given these labels are without any borders, that's normally what you'd want to do. What I did was to make sure the top two labels (in the first row, across) had their contents shifted down by at least 4mm. That way, they still printed and didn't have their "tops" cut off. Drop me a Private Message via www.bookcrossing.com if you are going to use this template and don't understand what I'm getting at.

BookCrossing labels template for Avery brand multifunction labels (hence no "L" or "J" prefix), reference number 5167, with eighty 0.5 inch by 1.75 inch (12.7mm x 44.4mm) labels per sheet. I personally don't think these are big enough for "normal" BookCrossing labels, so instead have created a template where each label has three small copies of the "Ballycumber" BookCrossing logo. You can then print these out, cut them up, and use them for book spines or similar. Also compatible with label reference numbers 5267, 8167, 8867, 8927, 15267, 18167, 48467, 48267, and 48867. Take care with this template, as it looks to be one for label sheets that have no margins. The labels are formatted as such, although some clipping is evident when I view them in “Print Preview” mode. Also note that Microsoft Word may suggest the margins need “fixing” when you attempt to make page layout changes or print these. I’d suggest you do some test prints to plain paper first with these. These are my attempts at some BookCrossing label designs. I've used the template for Banner brand labels, reference number 9670019, with sixteen 1.33 inch by 3.85 inch labels per sheet and have just been creating one label in each design, all with space for your BCID number. It's really simple to download this template, then in MS Word, do a "select cell", "copy", then select a cell on your own chosen template and "paste" the new design into it. Then repeat for all the other cells etc. Or pick one, clear the other 15 cells, and copy the one you want into those 15 cells you cleared. Of course, you may need to play around with the text size and graphics to fit, if you use another template for different-sized labels, but If demand warrants, I'll create some full templates, all correctly-sized with these designs. You can see a preview image of the designs on this template here; http://www.fishchipsandmushypeas.co.uk/bc/BC Labels-My Designs.pdf.

 I'd noticed recently from looking at a load of books in my own little OBCZ just how many people put "bookplates" in their books that they release. I've always been a "labels-only" guy myself, but I decided to have a crack at making a simple bookplate for myself. Having finished it, I've uploaded it for anyone else who wants it too. Basically, it's just a picture of a Chelmsford Bus, some text, and a place to record the BCID, date, place and your name, just like most other bookplates. Each bookplate measures 5.53 inches by 4.01 inches and there's four on this A4-size Word template. A preview image of the bookplate is available here; http://www.fishchipsandmushypeas.co.uk/bc/BC Bus Bookplate.jpg

Another idea, and another template for a bookplate and please feel free to use it yourself; this one is supposed to be like a "ransom" note, and uses a dedicated True-Type font; "Ransom Note" by Ted Alspach. Has the text, along with a place to record the BCID, date, place and your name, just like most other bookplates. Each bookplate measures 5.53 inches by 4.01 inches and there's four on this A4-size Word template. I've saved the file with the font "embedded", so you shouldn't need to mess around with having to install it into Windows yourself. However, if it doesn't work, and all you see is plain text, you can download the font from the link I've provided below in the "Miscellaneous items;" section, and install it yourself very easily. Chelmsford Libraries self-service "reserved books for collection" shelves, inside Chelmsford Library. These shelves are just to the left of the "Hello" desk, and customers with books to collect simply walk up, look for the section for the first letter of their surname, find their book in it, and take it off the shelf. The books remain on the shelves for 10 days, and once this time is up, they are usually taken off again by the library staff and put back into the system. This is my latest idea to try and give fellow BookCrossers subscribing to Chelmsford release alerts more of a chance to get my books. I'd heard from one who was frustrated at getting the notification for releases in their "Daily Digest" email hours after the books have been released, meaning there would be little point in trying to hunt them down, as they'd have already "long gone" from their public release point. This way, I'm hoping that only someone getting the alerts will get it, as it won't be "visible" to anyone just passing, if you see what I mean. You can see the library's location on this Google Maps link. Left this at a large size too.

BC Post-It Notes Template.doc

CLICK HERE!

I know a lot of people including myself like to stick a brightly-coloured “Post-It!” note on the front of any books we release, and what I write depends on what sort of mood I’m in. Although “Post-It!” notes aren’t that expensive, it occurred to me that you could just as easily print out slips of coloured paper and use a long-lasting glue stick to tack them to the front of your books. To this end, I’ve knocked up a simple template in Microsoft Word which has an A4-sized sheet of twelve 2.58 by 2.78 inch / 70.5mm x 70.5mm squares laid out a on yellow-coloured background, with a selection of things you might write. You can then print this out onto plain or coloured paper (once you turn off the yellow coloured background the template includes), cut them out, and stick them on your books. ;-) Text can be changed as you wish. A preview image of the “Post-It!” note template is available here; http://www.fishchipsandmushypeas.co.uk/bc/BC Post-It Template.JPG

Not written by me, but by another BC fan by the name of Yoko, this is a simple guide to BookCrossing, produced as three duplicate columns on one side of A4, and in .pdf format, and can be used as a flyer / handout etc. This version was created in September 2004, and gives the statistics as they were then of 287,000 BookCrossers having registered 1.37 million books. Several updated versions by Mr Bearly, giving the latest figures to July 2010, are below, and it’s suggested you use one of these instead.

As above, this is a simple guide to BookCrossing, produced as three duplicate columns on one side of A4, and in Open Document .odt format, for OpenOffice and others, and can be used as a flyer / handout etc. This version was created in July 2010 by Mr Bearly, and updated to give the latest statistics of 850,000 BookCrossers having registered 6.2 million books. It’s suggested that you use this version instead, rather than the out of date original above. I've had to zip this .odt file up, as for some reason, there's an issue downloading it if it's left in it's native version. There are many free and pay-for .zip file compression / decompression programs out there. See "WinZip" here; http://www.winzip.com/ as an example of one of the most widely known ones. BC Book Review Word Bubble Cut Out Template.doc

CLICK HERE!

22KB

This was an idea I had for another attention-grabbing method for books you are going to release or that you have on your OBCZ shelves; It’s basically a template for an A4 “Word Bubble”, like the ones comic book characters “speak” through. What I started doing was taking snippets of reviews of the book I was about to release or put on the shelf, pasting these into the word bubble, then printing and cutting it out. I then stuck it inside the book, like a kind-of giant bookmark, with the “tail” of the word bubble staying inside between the pages, and the “bubble” bit with the text would then be sticking out of the book at the top. It’ll make more sense if you look at the template, which I’ve left some text in. Print it onto thick card, cut it out, and place it between the pages of a book to see what I mean. A preview image of the Word Bubble template is available here; http://www.fishchipsandmushypeas.co.uk/bc/BC Word Bubble Image.jpg

 Following a BookCrossing forum post recently from one chasadchick, this is a zipped collection of files to demonstrate a method to insert  "QR Code" images for BookCrossing "new journal entry" URLS into labels, via Word's "Mail Merge" function, all ready for printing. Read the forum post and my replies to it in the link above, and also see http://hubpages.com/hub/IncludePicture for the method. File contains three example QR Code images, Mail Merge set-up Word document with the three images, and a .mdb Microsoft database file the Mail Merge document "looks" to for its data, along with 'web links for the various sites used.

I've used the template for Banner brand labels, reference number 9670019, with sixteen 1.33 inch by 3.85 inch labels per sheet, all with space for your BCID number. BC WBN Labels Banner 9670019 One Page Blank.pdfCLICK HERE!19KBThese are my own "World Book Night" label designs, now updated for 2012. I've used the same Microsoft Word template for Banner brand labels, reference number 9670019 as above, with sixteen 1.33 inch by 3.85 inch labels per sheet, all with space for your BCID number, but this time made a .pdf version. This one could be printed onto plain paper for a manual "cut and paste" or similar, if you don't have or don't want to use Word. You can see a preview image of the identical 2011 design on this template here; http://www.fishchipsandmushypeas.co.uk/bc/BC WBN Labels Banner 9670019 One Page Blank.pdf

I've used my original "four to an A4 page" Microsoft Word template for these, and all have space for your BCID number, but this time I've saved it as a .pdf file, for anyone not wanting or having access to Word. BC WBN Labels Banner 9670019 Mail Merge 2 Labels Per Record Updated.docCLICK HERE!178KBBy request, these are my own "World Book Night" label designs, now updated for 2012, in Microsoft Word "Mail Merge" format, using a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet as the data source. This data source spreadsheet file is called "BC WBN Mail Merge Data.xls", and is available below to also download. You'll need both files really to use this Mail Merge template, unless you download just the Word document, and then link it to your own prepared data source. I've named the merge fields in my example as "BCID" and "Date", although this second one isn't used in the labels. As before, I've used my original "four to an A4 page" Microsoft Word template for these, and all have space for your BCID number, which is generated from the data source automatically when the merge operation is run. You can see a preview image of the design on this template here; http://www.fishchipsandmushypeas.co.uk/bc/BC WBN Bookplates Blank.pdf.
BC WBN Mail Merge Data.xlsCLICK HERE!23KBBy request, this is the Microsoft Excel data source spreadsheet file for my own "World Book Night" label designs, now updated for 2012, and in Microsoft Word "Mail Merge" format, available as above to download. You'll need both files really to use this data file. I've named the merge fields "BCID" and "Date", although this second one isn't used in the labels. It's in '95 / 2003 plain .xls version, but any problems using this in conjunction with the Mail Merge template above, don't hesitate to drop me a PM, and I'll do my best to help. Don't forget clear the example BCID numbers and substitute them for your own allocated ones!
BC Bookmarks thebookfairy.pubCLICK HERE!68KBThis is a Microsoft Publisher template for 6 bookmarks on a sheet of A4, designed by fellow BookCrosser "thebookfairy". From her email, "I designed a bookmark to put with my world book night books. It prints 6 up on A4 thin card which you then run through a trimmer. The cunning bit is that it has 'Read Me' at the top and bottom end either of which can be left sticking out of the book when it's left in the wild. I'm sure I'm reinventing the wheel". I reckon this is great too, and can be used with any books, and I expect could be adapted  / changed too, to meet any other requirements, but please don't forget to credit the original creator. I especially like that "Read Me!" bit that can be left visible and poking out of a book. Thanks again, bookfairy for sending this, and agreeing to have me host your work so others can download and use it too.  You can see a preview image of the design on this template here; http://www.fishchipsandmushypeas.co.uk/bc/BC WBN Label Image.JPG.
BC Bookmarks thebookfairy.pdfCLICK HERE!21KBThis is a .pdf format version of the 6 bookmarks on a sheet of A4 Microsoft Publisher template, designed by fellow BookCrosser "thebookfairy" and for those who don't have Microsoft Publisher, but still want to print the bookmarks. You can see a preview image of the design on this template here; http://www.fishchipsandmushypeas.co.uk/bc/BC WBN Label Image.JPG.
BookCrossing-BookMarks.pdfCLICK HERE!822KBThis is a copy of the bookmarks template as available on the www.bookcrossing.com website. I have placed it here for other members who may experience a problem downloading it from the main side, and following a request from "Plum-Crazy" who was experiencing problems downloading it. It's commonly referred to as the "Signpost" bookmarks, and has six bookmarks laid out on an A4 sheet in .pdf format, with space to write your BCID numbers.
Amazon_books_GTG.xmlCLICK HERE!25KBDon't know if this is of any interest to anyone using the Google Toolbar, but I've written a button that takes the text you've highlighted on your current Internet page, and sends it to http://www.amazon.co.uk as a search request, limited to their books department only. I like to put some background into my journals / release notes for my BookCrossing books, and was fed up (or just plain lazy) having to open new windows and copy / paste text etc across to "look up" authors and their books. With this button installed, I just highlight the author and book title from the BookCrossing page, and with one click on the button, you jump to Amazon.co.uk's search results in their "Books" department, for the text you highlighted. It's certainly not a new idea, but I was sick of all the "bloat" that other versions available online had. This one is totally free for install and use. You can install it from the direct link; http://toolbar.google.com/buttons/add?url=http://www.fishchipsandmushypeas.co.uk/Amazon_books_GTG.xml or, if you prefer; http://preview.tinyurl.com/65cpwx2 or also by visiting the Google Toolbar Button Gallery at; http://www.google.com/gadgets/directory?synd=toolbar&frontpage=1, and searching using the term "JamesUK" to find it. More about the Toolbar itself (I would be lost without it's functions now) here; http://www.google.com/intl/en_uk/toolbar/ie/index.html  (UK-based link).
ItsMyBook.mp3CLICK HERE!27MBBBC Radio 4 Documentary - "It's My Book".

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01351q2

If you weren't able to catch this great documentary from the 14/08/2011 I've recorded it off-air in real-time, converted it to .mp3 format, and have uploaded it to my website here for anyone here in the UK, and especially those overseas who don't want to, or can't use the BBC's own "iPlayer" application, to download, and listen to it.

/quote from http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01351q2;

"It's My Book";

"It's something that most of us have to do, from time to time: get rid of old books. People moving house, someone whose partner has died, those simply needing more space who find that their bookshelves just aren't big enough.

Sarah Cuddon examines the difficult decisions behind the seemingly mundane choices we make when deciding which books stay and which books go.

Amongst the people she talks to are Brian, who lives in Dorset. One shelf at a time, he wades through, weighing up a Delia Smith against a book about Spike Milligan. Does it stay on the shelf? Should it go in the box? Angel is contemplating a vast and varied collection of valuable volumes left after the death of her husband. Whilst Trevor in South East London peruses each title, skimming, pausing to reflect on his attachment to Boswell, Hunter S Thompson and James Lee Burke. They all stare at their shelves and start making painful decisions, based on their human relationship with individual books.

What will happen to them? Sarah visits Britain's largest second hand bookshop, Bookbarn International which is home to around 3 million rejected and dejected titles all hoping for a new owner. Every book has to justify its shelf space and Sarah discovers the fate of thousands of unwanted ones. Many are sold for scrap and pulped. Some are reprieved and shipped overseas. Death, decomposition or liberation?

Arriving early, pavement bookseller Mike assesses junked books at a car boot sale. Why doesn't he pick up Mr Nice by Howard Marx? It's a very personal and selective set of criteria, making decisions about which books are worth something and which books aren't. As the stories unfold, we learn that the reasons people hold on to them are as individual as the books."

/endquote

It's about 30 minutes long, recorded it off-air in real-time, then converted to .mp3 format @ 128kbps, giving it a file size of 27MB.

Hope you enjoy it!

Other label resources;

http://www.bookcrossing.com/labels - BookCrossing.com's official labels generator page. Allows you to download sheets of ten "blank", or either ten or 100 pre-numbered labels as Portable Document Format (.pdf) documents, designed for Avery 10-up 5163 or 5263 label stock sheets. The individual labels are two inches by four inches, and the BCID range you receive / print will be automatically recorded as "belonging" to you, so that you or your organization will get credit as the original registrant of the books, as soon as someone comes to the site and creates a journal entry with one of the numbers.

http://www.bookcrossing.nl/prenumbered_letter.php - Very useful Pdf-format label "generator"; takes your first initial pre-number, and creates a sheet of sequentially-numbered labels as a new Pdf document, ready for printing. Supports labels;

http://bc.ardik.org/labels/pdf_pn.php?pre=999&start=1111153 - Ardik's site for printing pre-numbers, matching the old www.BookCrossing.com method. You have to adjust the numbers after the text "pre" and "start" in the URL, so that they match your own BCID numbers .This will give you exactly the labels you used to get before the site update (Avery brand, reference 5163 stock layout, in .pdf format), but only in sets of 10. If you have a block of 100 pre-numbers, you'll need to repeat the process accordingly. The example URL above will give you labels from BCID numbers 999-1111153 through to 999-1111162.

http://www.bookcrossing.com/forum/7/358601 - An old thread from 2008 that was started on the original www.bookcrossing.com website, titled "User created labels links", and a very useful resource of links to fan sites and user created labels. Very often asked for and re-posted regularly in the current www.bookcrossing.com forums.

Pre-number release and registered release differences;

This is just a bit of a "cut 'n' paste" from a Private Message I sent to a new BookCrosser who was having trouble understanding the whole "pre-number" release steps, against the one-by-one register, then release steps. Thought it was useful to save and share in case it helps someone else in the same boat;

"You get the individual and unique BCID numbers for each copy of each book you want to release by either registering a  book, ("Home" / "Register Book") or by going straight to "Release Book" ("Home" / "Release Book"). There's no need to  register a book before releasing it, you can do "both" parts by just doing the "release".

You'll see what I mean, but just to explain;

When you register a book, you input it's details and it's "added" to your virtual "bookshelf", set with a status that  you specify when you register it, from "Available", "Reserved" etc. All these categories do is classify what you are "doing" with the book, in the sense that if you mark something "available", when someone else views your bookshelf, they will see that book as available (I.E. you're done with it) and may PM you to borrow it or something. Similarly, if you set the book to "reserved" as part of it's registration, people who then see it on your shelf will assume you still "want it" etc. Same with "To be read" and that.

Essentially, they are just ways to "filter" and store your records.

When you complete the registration process for the book, the website will issue you with the individual tracking BCID number for that issue of that book. That stays with it and never changes.

With the book registered, and "in the system", you can then choose to release it by going to "Home" / "Release Book". After putting in the BCID number for the book, you'll get similar pick-lists for the release location just the same way you did when you re-released my book. And job done! ;-)

If you instead go straight to the "release book" (like I do), then as part of the release process, you will "register" the book first. It's just a way of saving yourself an extra step; why register it and have it put "on the shelf", if you then have to "go back in" and do the release steps; this way, you do both parts in one process.

Hope that makes sense!

If you really get into it, you can get hold of a set of "bulk" BCID numbers in advance, which is what I do; on the main page when you've logged in, under "%Username%'s Books", click on "Pre-numbered". Here, you can see any previously issued "blocks" of BCID numbers, and request more blocks (in 10's and 100's) by clicking on the little "Request" pick list.

Once I've got a block of 100 numbers allocated to me, I can run off 100 labels with the numbers on, all ready to stick on the books. With these "pre-numbers", you don't register or release them by going to "Home" / "Release" etc., instead you go back to "Pre-Numbered" under "%Username%'s Books", and underneath each issued pre-numbered BCID you'll see "make release notes" or "new journal entry". I just click on "make release notes" on my next number in the list and with my fresh book, enter it's details, release location, slap the labels on it, and let it go. ;-)

OK, so hopefully that covers off the basics of registering then releasing, or just "fast-track" releasing for you, as I like to think of it.

Of course, once you've decided to release a few books, you soon realise that it's a chore writing inside each book individually, even if you just put the website address and the book's BCID... and you really need to try and make as many "pointers" to the fact the book is registered inside, to try and get people to come back and journal it."
